Geriatric Dentistry

Geriatric dentistry is the dental care of older patients (65 to over 85 years old). Geriatric dentistry is becoming more in demand due to the rising older population. From 2005 to 2015, life expectancy rose from 67.2 to 70.8. by 2050, it is expected to rise to 77. The population of people over the age of 60 is expected to double by 2050.

Older patients develop dental problems that are associated with age-related illnesses. More than half of all dental patients over the age of 60 are on medication(s) and are medically compromised in some way. Root and coronal cavities, periodontitis, and xerostomia (dry mouth) are more likely to be seen in geriatric patients.

Some geriatric patients are also dealing with physical and cognitive issues that may complicate treatment. These issues can make dental treatment harder due to sensitivity to noise and distractions. Minimalizing these possible deterrents is important.

Dr. Francisco Mondragon in Bonita, California, provides geriatric services for older patients. Dr. Mondragon understands the drug interactions of prescription drugs as well as over-the-counter medications that can present problems in treatment.
